What temperature should Lauter be?
between 168 °F and 176 °F
The ideal lauter temperature is between 168 °F and 176 °F (76–80 °C). The pH level is important because most water supplies are alkaline; the more you lauter, the more the pH of the sweet wort will rise toward alkalinity. Typically, mash pH is in the 5.2–5.7 range before lautering.
What is the difference between a mash tun and lauter tun?
Lauter tuns are, in general, designed much like infusion mash tuns, but they are wider and shallower, as shown in Figure 10.1. Like the mash tun, filtering is through slots in a false bottom that supports the grain bed.
How do you increase Lauter efficiency?
By moving the water through the grain bed more slowly, the water can extract more sugar from each unit volume of grain, resulting in better extract efficiency per unit volume of water collected.
Can you Sparge too hot?
Hot Sparging and Astringency However sparging too hot will result in tannin extraction in the finished beer. The maximum temperature for sparging is 170 F (77 C). Sparging above that can result in tannin extraction.
What happens if Sparge water is too hot?
Sparge water is heated because hot water dissolves sugar more effectively than cool water. However, if the sparge water is too hot, it will dissolve not only sugars, but also tannins from the grain husks. A small amount of tannins are present in any beer.
Can you mash in the Lauter tun?
Mashing occurs in a separate mash mixer, in which case the mash must be transferred by a pump to the lauter tun. The mash is usually pumped in from the bottom or side of the vessel to avoid excessive aeration of the mash.
What is a Lauter tun used for?
A lauter tun is the traditional vessel used for separation of the extracted wort and has a thin false bottom containing slits that enable the vessel to hold back any solids, therefore allowing only liquids to pass through.
Why is my mash efficiency so low?
If the mash is not kept at the precise temperature the recipe calls for, optimal results and consistent efficiency will not be achieved. The first step to ensure the proper temperature is to ensure the strike temperature is sufficiently high.
