Why does God whisper to Elijah?
God’s words to Elijah were whispered because the prophet was close and listening. That’s why Elijah covered his head. God was so near that the prophet was careful to be reverent. In that moment, nothing else mattered except hearing God’s quiet voice.
How do you know when God is closer?
Spend some time with God today, and you will be blessed and refreshed.
- Get quiet.
- Read your bible.
- Write out your prayers in a dedicated notebook; these can be for others or yourself.
- Go for a walk and talk with God.
- Meditate on Scripture.
- Put on some worship music and immerse yourself in the melody and lyrics.
How do you know when God is talking to?
This can happen through prayer, contemplation and/or time in the Bible. We begin to discern God’s voice over the noise of our world as we give time to these disciplines. The Holy Spirit begins speaking to us. We begin to hear God through those around us, circumstances and even our conscience.

After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Yes … God speaks directly to humans. Over 2,000 times in the Old Testament there are phrases such as, “And God spoke to Moses” or “the word of the Lord came to Jonah” or “God said.” We see an example of this in Jeremiah 1:9.
