How are storms in UK named?
The criteria we use for naming storms is based on our National Severe Weather Warnings service. This is based on a combination of both the impact the weather may have, and the likelihood of those impacts occurring. A storm will be named when it has the potential to cause an amber or red warning.
Are UK storms named alphabetically?
Sometimes the UK will be hit by storms from Europe or other countries, and the storm will keep the name the first country gave it – even if it doesn’t follow the UK’s alphabetical order – like Storm Jorge from Spain which hit Europe in February.
