As a general rule, your gussets would need to be about 11 inches or so. They would be mounted onto 4 ½ inches of the longer side of the rafters. This means that you can deep the rafter by 6 ½ inches.

- Arrange the truss members on the ground.
- Lay the plywood truss plates at the connection of each truss.
- Hammer the truss plates into place with five 6 d nails on each connecting member.
- Repeat the procedure for all connections on one side of the truss.
