Solo and Ensemble events in band, choir and orchestra are scheduled in all UIL Music Regions. Students earning a Division One Rating at the region competition are eligible to advance to the UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest traditionally hosted in Austin on Memorial Day Week-end.
What happens at state solo and Ensemble?
Solo & Ensemble Contest is an annual event that takes place throughout the country in which students prepare their own performances either by themselves or with a small group of friends. These performances are evaluated by a judge and scored against a rating system.
What are the ratings for solo and Ensemble?
SCORING. Each student or group of students is evaluated by one judge and rated on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being the highest rating possible. Students or groups that earn a rating of 1 (or “Superior”) are qualified for State Solo & Ensemble Festival which is held in March.

The focus of the Music Memory contest is an in-depth study of fine pieces of music literature taken from a wide spectrum of music genres to expose students to great composers, their lives and their music.
What does a 1C mean in Solo and Ensemble?

Results and TSSEC Students that qualify for Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest will receive a rating of 1C (certified). Students that receive a first division but do not qualify will receive a rating of I (one).
What is Solo & Ensemble?
Solo and Ensemble is an opportunity for students to perform in front of a professional judge and receive feedback. A student is given a first, second, or third based on the quality of their performance but they do not compete against other students.
What does co mean in Solo Ensemble?

(This rating only applies to Regional Solo & Ensemble Festivals.) Teachers may choose to register any festival event as Comment Only (CO). If CO is indicated, the adjudicator will provide written and verbal feedback, but no rating will be indicated. The overall rating will be reported as CO.

Music Performance Assessment An MPA is a major assessment event for secondary music programs in which a musical performance is evaluated on specified criteria. The assessments are held annually for marching bands, concert large ensembles (band, chorus, orchestra), and solos-ensembles.
Where can I find PML scores for each solo instrument?
We have compiled an index, showing which PML titles for each solo instrument (Grade 1) are available as scores for checkout at the Schneider Music Library. Please note that this is only a partial list; other PML titles may be available as well! (Search our online catalog or ask library staff.)
When do I need to register my solo or small ensemble?
April 1 through April 15: Regsitration open for state-qualifying solos & small ensembles. See below. April 16 through May 1: Late registration open for state-qualifying solos & small ensembles. Additional fees apply. See below. No entries will be accepted after May 1.
