What should be used to clean a muzzleloader?
Normally it’s held in place by one or two bolts. Once the lock has been removed, scrub both sides with an old toothbrush and hot water. Make sure the entire lock is completely dry, and then lightly oil and replace it.

You may have some build up that needs to be removed. I’m assuming you’re not wiping with a dry patch. I don’t clean between shots. Use a spit patch on the target range and go 30+ rounds with no issues.
Is ballistol good for muzzleloaders?
Ballistol is a really good lube with black powder. Spray it into the barrels of my shot gun between stages and never had an issue with shucking shells.

I clean my muzzleloader after every hunting session, but as far as cleaning the gun in between multiple loads on any given day, I only have to run a wet patch down the barrel after every 7-10 loads. I do this because otherwise, as you mentioned, the loads seem to start snagging on the fouling.
