Do reflux stills need a stripping run?
Most reflux stills will need to be “de-tuned” That is have their packing removed before being used as a stripper. There is to the best of my knowledge at least one still that should not be used for stripping. This is the T500, it is a store bought or mass produced Reflux Still that was never designed for stripping.
Can you use a thumper on a reflux still?
Making moonshine with a thumper instead of a pot still is great because thumpers essentially perform two distillations in one—without stripping the flavor the way reflux distillation does.
Can you make whiskey in a reflux still?
Essentially, both stills are up to the task. Most people find pot stills as versatile since it could be utilized to flavor schnapps, whiskey and rum. It also decreases a finished wash’s volume and removes yeast cells. A reflux still is effective in creating a flavorless and odorless product.
How much should I discard when distilling?
Additionally, commercial distillers have determined that simply discarding a standard amount per batch, based on batch size, is enough to keep things safe. The rule of thumb is to discard 1/3 of a pint jar for every 5 gallons of wash being distilled.
What temperature should I run my still at?
However majority of stills are designed to run similarly. The temperature that ethyl alcohol boils off at is 78C-82C and therefore if your still has a temperature gauge in the top of the condenser (usually in a rubber bung situated at the top) it should run between 78C-82C (with 78C being ideal).
How do you keep moonshine flavor clear?
Adding sugar can also adjust the taste of your moonshine To add final touches, you can add 5 teaspoons of caramelized raw or white sugar per liter of your spirit. You can add additional sugar if you want it sweeter because your final product will greatly depend on your taste buds.
What is the reflux column on a still?
When the Condenser is fully assembled it should look like the image to the right. The reflux column is the part of the Still that is responsible for producing high proof alcohol. It does this by producing multiple distillations within the column. To build the Reflux column we need to assemble a few things first.
How does an alcohol reflux column work?
This refluxing of vapour and liquid purifies the alcohol, leaving behind water and unwanted flavours until you have a neutral spirit. This refluxing of liquid inside of the column can be controlled by the flow rate of water going through your reflux condenser.
What is the best packing material for Reflux stills?
Commonly used packing material for Reflux stills include stainless steel scrubbing pads, marbles, broken safety glass from an automobile, glass beads or raschig rings. The idea here is to use a packing material with a high surface area that won’t release impurities or poisons into the Moonshine.
What material are your reflux columns made of?
Our reflux columns are made in both stainless steel and copper. Both will do a great job, however each material has its benefits. A stainless reflux tower is less expensive than the copper variety, and it will hold its shine very well without polishing.
