What is ISO 9626?
ISO 9626:2016 applies to rigid stainless steel needle tubing suitable for use in the manufacture of hypodermic needles and other medical devices primarily for human use. It provides requirements and test methods for the tubes manufactured for needles as component used in medical devices.
How are needles tested?
The required forces are dependent on the needle gauge and wall thickness, two factors that will dictate which application the needle will be used for. Testing is performed using a three-point bending assembly to determine the stiffness of the material.
What is a hypodermic injection used for?
A hypodermic (hypo – under, dermic – the skin) needle is a hollow needle commonly used with a syringe to inject substances into the body or extract fluids from it. They may also be used to take liquid samples from the body, for example taking blood from a vein in venipuncture.
How do you test a needle sharpness?
Sharpness is determined by measuring the penetration force of a needle into a known medium which closely replicates skin (eg. polyurethane rubber). A membrane of uniform thickness is held under constant tension and can be repositioned to allow many tests to be performed.
What is needle gauge?
The gauge (abbreviated as “G”) of a needle refers to the size of the hole in the needle. The higher the gauge, the smaller the hole. Needles come in various gauges and lengths. The length of a needle is listed after the gauge number. For example, 25G ½ refers to a 25 gauge, ½ inch-long needle.
Do needles lose sharpness?
For all intents and purposes, single use needles, regardless of gauge, become dull within 2 to 3 uses, and should be considered blunt by the 4th to 5th use.
What gauge needle is used for IV?
For intravenous IG (IVIG), most nurses use a 20-, 22- or 24-gauge needle. IV needles are universally color- coded for gauge. The most common color needles for IVIG are pink for 20-gauge, blue for 22-gauge and yellow for 24-gauge.
What is a 20 gauge needle?
