Who owns Goyt Valley?
Stockport Corporation acquired the Goyt Valley for the building of the two reservoirs – Fernilee and Errwood.
How big is the Goyt Valley?
The River Goyt runs for about 30 miles from Axe Edge into the River Tame at Stockport which in turn forms the Mersey. It is therefore varied along its length.
Is Toddbrook Reservoir open?
Subject to planning permission, work is scheduled to start on site this winter with the reservoir to be fully open again in early 2024. The repair plan involves building a new side channel weir, “tumble bay” spillway channel and stilling basin on the northern side of the dam.

The Riverside path back to the car park is always a joy – at any time of year. The walk along the eastern shore of Fernilee Reservoir is probably the most popular in the Goyt valley, particularly for dog-walkers and families with young children. Many people simply walk along the old railway track, but I always prefer to do a complete circuit.
How do I get to the Goyt reservoir?
The western path is through woodland, and the opposite side along a disused railway track. It’s possible to slightly shorten this walk by simply crossing the dam wall at the northern end of the reservoir. But I prefer to go a little further, crossing the Goyt about half a mile down stream.
Is the River Goyt wheelchair friendly?
