Can you drive up Mount Mitchell?
The peak is located off of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Mount Mitchell State Park, just 35 miles northeast of downtown Asheville. You can drive nearly all the way to the summit, making it easy to explore this natural wonder. And, it’s free for all to enjoy. At the summit, there’s an observation deck.
Do you need a permit to hike Mount Mitchell?
Red Tape. In general there’s not much red tape here unless you want to camp where you’ll need a permit inside the Mount Mitchell State Park and need to pay a fee at the Black Mountain Campground. What time does Mt Mitchell open?
March & April: 7 AM-8 PM. May-August: 7 AM-10 PM. September & October: 7 AM-9 PM. Closed Christmas Day and for snow/ice.
Is Jordan Lake Open?
Open daily: In 2021, the visitor center is closed on November 25 and 26, December 23 to 27, and New Year’s Day.
How long does it take to climb Mount Mitchell?
Today, this is the trail mainly used to climb Mount Mitchell. The trail begins at the Black Mountain Campground (operated by the U.S. Forest Service) and ends at the summit. This 6-mile trail requires about 4.5 hours of strenuous hiking to reach the top and 3.5 hours to return.
Is Mt. Mitchell trail open?
We are open. (The Blue Ridge Parkway is now open from both the North and South of the park.) Overnight parking is permitted for people backcountry camping in the surrounding National Forest.
Are there bears on Mt. Mitchell?
It’s not uncommon to encounter black bears at Mount Mitchell State Park, particularly in warm weather months. A few things to remember: Never feed bears. Bears that become accustomed to human food and lose their fear of people often must be destroyed.
