What are the symptoms of a prostatic abscess?
Prostate Abscess
- Prostate abscesses are caused by bacteria.
- Common symptoms include frequent urination, pain while urinating, difficulty with urination, or retaining urine.
- Men with symptoms that suggest a possible prostate abscess undergo ultrasonography and possibly cystoscopy to confirm the diagnosis.
What antibiotics treat prostatitis?
An antibiotic is used to treat prostatitis that is caused by an infection. Some antibiotics that might be used are trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, doxycycline, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin and ofloxin. You might have to take antibiotics for several weeks or even a few months.
What are causes of prostatitis?
Risk factors for prostatitis include:
- Young or middle-aged adulthood.
- Previous prostatitis.
- Infection of the urinary or reproductive system.
- HIV infection or AIDS.
- Use of a tube inserted into the urethra to drain the bladder (urinary catheter)
- Diagnostic sampling of prostate tissue (biopsy)
Is prostate abscess serious?
Regardless of the surgical procedure, the presence of a prostatic abscess did not increase the risk of septic shock during treatment. In our experience, patients with prostate abscesses require long-term antibiotic treatment and potentially surgery depending on abscess size.
Does abscess mean?

Can a prostate abscess burst?
Spontaneous rupture of the prostatic abscess is extremely unusual; only one case has been reported in the literature. Authors highlight the importance of early diagnosis of prostatic abscess and close monitoring of patients, with diabetes or immunosuppression, treated for acute prostatitis.
How do you drain a prostatic abscess?
This may be performed by transrectal or transperineal ultrasound-guided, digital-guided puncture/ drainage by the perineal route, transurethral incision of the prostate, TURP, or open perineal drainage. All methods have been reported to be safe and effective.
What is the strongest antibiotic for prostatitis?

Is percutaneuos transperineal drainage the best treatment for prostate abscess?
Once an abscess of the prostate is diagnosed, anaerobic antimicrobial therapy should be added and transrectal or percutaneous transperineal aspiration and drainage is required. The authors consider the percutaneuos transperineal drainage to be the most effective and safest solution.
Is transrectal sonography reliable for prostatic abscess?
Transrectal sonography (TRUS) is considered a very reliable imaging method to diagnose a prostatic abscess 1,2. It usually demonstrates ill-defined hypoechoic areas within an enlarged and/or distorted prostate gland. There may be inhomogeneous echoes within these ill-defined areas 8,9.
