Where are the ice caves? The ice caves are located at the western end of the Mainland Unit of Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in far northern Bayfield County in northwestern Wisconsin. There is a parking area and stairs to the beach/ice at the end of Meyers Beach Road.
Can you find the Bayfield Peninsula sea caves all year?
The hiking trail extends approximately 4.5 miles, with a boardwalk over the first 0.7 miles of the trail. The first sea cave overlook is about 2 miles from the trailhead. This trail is rugged with stream crossings and steep slopes. The trail is usable year round, but in winter it may be snowpacked or icy.
Are there bears on Madeline Island?
The cameras allow us to confirm the presence of species such as coyote, river otter, bald eagle, white-tailed deer, black bear, Canada geese, red squirrel, raccoon, short-tailed weasel, snowshoe hare, and even some rodents. We also believe we have observed a single lone wolf on Madeline Island.
How do you get to the sea caves?
To get to the sea cave, you will need to walk to the end of Luscomb’s Point, where the surfers go down and scramble the roughly hewn steps down to the water. From here, you can walk along the rocks for about 100 yards before you have to get your feet wet to proceed on.

The Madeline Island Ferry Line boat landing is located at the northeast end of Bayfield. Turn east onto Washington Avenue off of State Highway 13. Ferry service is provided from March or April until freeze-up, weather permitting. The ferry ride takes approximately 20-25 minutes.
