Can I mow my lawn with a scythe?
Many people mow their lawn with a scythe. We do a bit of it with the grounds at Scythe Supply to demonstrate that mowing a lawn with a scythe is doable. It is a good way to learn the stroke and rhythm of using a scythe. It requires a very sharp blade and you need to stone the blade often to keep a keen edge.
How long should a scythe blade be?
A long, thin blade 90 to 100 centimetres (35 to 39 in) is most efficient for mowing grass or wheat, while a shorter, more robust scythe 60 to 70 centimetres (24 to 28 in) is more appropriate for clearing weeds, cutting reed or sedge and can be used with the blade under water for clearing ditches and waterways.
How thick can a scythe cut?

Is a scythe better than a lawnmower?

When should you peen a scythe?
The frequency of peening depends on the blade and the work it is being asked to do. Mowing lawns and meadows require a fine, ultra-sharp edge and so more frequent peening of the blade is necessary (something like after every 4 hours of mowing.) Less frequent peening is required when mowing rougher grass and weeds.
How do you mow with a scythe?
Cut that “rubber band” in a fluid motion, sweep the scythe before you, along the ground, and into the edge of the grass that you are mowing. The blade should cut the grass down low. If it doesn’t, you either went too far into the grass, or your blade isn’t sharp enough.

One good man can scythe an acre in a day. It would probably require one person two or three days to ensure that that acre of mown grass was turned sufficiently to dry as quickly as possible.
