How competitive are Math REU programs?
REU programs are highly competitive and you should apply to several programs to maximize your chances of an acceptance. Most students apply to around 10-15 programs, and at least 8 is reasonable.
How hard is it to get into an REU?
Given that said REUs often admitted fewer than 1 in 50 applicants, and that they are usually meant for rising seniors, I figure I must have done something right. Fortunately I have been able to speak to the program director of the San Diego State University REU about what makes a good applicant.
Are NSF REU prestigious?
On a Friday in mid-March, a student in my department was notified that they were just accepted into an NSF-funded REU program. (For more about REUs, here’s an earlier post.) It’s program with a fair amount of prestige, but definitely not in the highest tier among the folks who keep track of status.
What are REU programs looking for?
REU programs invest a significant investment of time and money in students, and faculty want students who are interested, enthusiastic, work well in a team, and are hard working. At the very least, you can add that you will bring a strong work ethic to any research team you join.
Do REU programs send rejection letters?
Some REU programs only send out acceptances and don’t send out rejections. Remember that not everyone can get into their top choice, as most REU programs receive hundreds of applications.
How competitive are physics REUs?
Note that REUs are competitive, just like jobs (some have as low as ~10% acceptance, others have much higher rates). Be realistic with your choices, and consider applying to multiple programs if you’re intent on doing research this summer.
Are REU programs prestigious?
NSF-REUs are extremely competitive and ‘prestigious’. They are normally research positions that are fully-funded, more on the money later, which last 6-10 weeks during the summer. During my undergraduate, I was able to attend 3 different REU programs all over the country.
Are REU programs worth it?
REU programs are an excellent opportunity for students to explore their research interests and gain valuable research experience. Helps you to decide if you are graduate school material. Provides and opportunity to learn about a possible graduate school of interest.
Does an REU look good on resume?
This means that you can work with a professor while you are working on your undergraduate degree. You can also get funding from said professor, and as always… it looks good on your resume.
Is REU good for grad school?
But two out of every three of these say that the REU had some effect in accelerating their development as research mathematicians. Most respondents believe that graduate admissions committees saw their REU experience as valuable. Three out of every four say that it helped them get into a better graduate program.
