Should you condition leather before you dye it?
Prepare the leather. – Hydrate the leather with a light coat of olive oil; hydrated leather will better receive the dye. Apply a thin layer in a circular motion with a clean cloth. (Don’t forget the edges.) Be sure you’re using olive oil or jojoba oil — not a leather conditioner — for this step.

How do you get leather to absorb dye?
Use a spray bottle filled with water to dampen the surface of the leather. Do not over-saturate the leather, but make sure you have an even covering. This helps the leather absorb the dye evenly, resulting in a smooth finish. Some leather dyes do not require this step.
Should you wet leather before dying?
Some leather workers prefer dyeing leather wet, and some while it’s dry. When wet, the dye can be more evenly pulled into the fibers and provide for a smooth, even color.
Will leather dye rub off?
Occasionally dyes from leather garments (jackets, trousers, gloves, belts, bags, shoes) rub off and discolour other materials. Sometimes it’s just fluff from suede or nubuck, but often it is caused by dyes which have not been sufficiently fixed to the leather.
Can you mix leather dye?
In most cases the basic rules of any color mixing apply. An infinite number of color shades are possible. TIP: Do not attempt to mix Fiebing’s White Leather Dye or Fiebing’s Grey Leather Dye. White and Grey are not compatible for mixing with the other dye colors.
Can you dye leather after applying neatsfoot oil?
Be aware that the neatsfoot oil will darken the leather. If you must glue the leather, don’t apply the neatsfoot oil on the side that the gluing is done as it will prevent the glue from adhering properly. Give an hour or so for the oil to be absorbed evenly into the leather and then the leather is ready to be polished.
Do you have to seal leather after dying?
Leather crafts are excellent, and there are many colorful Leather items available in the market. You can also make your leather projects appear more attractive by getting some leather dye onto them. However, it would help also to apply a leather sealer afterward to make the colors durable.
How do you seal leather after dying it?
You can seal your leather dye with beeswax after letting the dye applied to the leather to dry. Get your beeswax and start rubbing on the leather item in circular motions, and ensure you rub every part of the leather, including the edges.
How long does leather dye take to dry?
You should allow for approximately 24 hours of dry time for Pro. Regular Leather Dye can dry in as little as 10 minutes and be sealed and finished almost right away. These dry times can vary wildly depending on where you live. If you’re in an extremely humid area, drying can take longer.
