What are Joomla positions?
Joomla positions are placeholders that you set modules to, such that a module is shown in that position. For example, if the Joomla template has a search position, you would place the search module in that position. The same goes for other module positions such as banner, sidebar, footer, breadcrumbs, left, right etc.
How do I enable preview in Joomla?
To do that, you will need to enable the module preview mode. From your site back-end, go to: Extensions » Templates then click the button: Options. In the setting panel, please enable the option Preview Modules Position. This option will help you preview available positions of current template then save the setting.

Why are my module positions not visible in the template?
This can happen when a template defines those module positions as conditional on there being modules enabled in that position. If there are no modules enabled in that position, the template may adapt and the position will not be visible.
