The most commonly used chemical method to passivate a stainless steel surface is to apply nitric acid. Nitric is a strong mineral acid and will quickly dissolve all iron compounds and other trace metals on the surface. I ran a whole buttload of A286 a few years ago. We had it drawn back to about a 13C rockwell. We were coming down to .070 wall thickness, and didn’t have problems with distortion. The part sucked more than the material. Ended up doing most of the roughing with ceramics, which was fun. It did eat quite a few tools, but it was priced accordingly.
