What is Nomex thread?
Nomex is a fire retardant thread. It chars at 675 degrees Fahrenheit, and decomposes at 700 degrees Fahrenheit, but never melts. This makes Nomex a great thread for sewing materials that are subject to high heat exposure. Fire retardant is not fire proof.

Is there fire retardant thread?
Poly Fire™ (Fire-Retardant Embroidery Thread) Poly Fire™ is a 100% polyester thread that has a special coating to make it fire-retardant. Poly Fire™ is certified to the criteria of EN ISO – Oeko –Tex.
Can you sew Nomex?
I’m not sure how fancy you want to go but here is how I sew mine which take only a few minutes. I use my wife’s old Kenmore sewing machine that works good enough for making Nomex chute protectors or parachutes. 1. Stitch pattern I use is a zig zag stitch.
How strong is Nomex thread?

Is Nomex the same as nylon?
Nomex and related aramid polymers are related to nylon, but have aromatic backbones, and hence are more rigid and more durable. Nomex is an example of a meta variant of the aramids (Kevlar is a para aramid).
What is the difference between Kevlar and Nomex?
Overall, Nomex® is both thermally and chemically very stable. The difference between Kevlar and Nomex is the location of the amide linkages on the aromatic ring. Those differences cause Nomex to a lower modulus and tensile strength and a higher elongation and solubility in organic solvents.
What thread is heat resistant?
Kevlar thread is heat resistant to 800F. Use up to size 69 in home sewing machines. It is also one of the strongest commercially available threads, but it only comes in yellow. Fire Retardant Sewing Thread – Use for sewing fire retardant gear like racing suits, welding apparel, and firefighting gear.
What type of thread is heat resistant?
Many threads will resist high temperatures and continue to function well in the seam, e.g. aramids, co-polyimide (P84™), glass fibre (bonded and PTFE-coated), quartz, and ceramic. These products remain functional (in the case of ceramic or quartz) up to temperatures in excess of 2000°F (see Table 4).
Is Kevlar thread fireproof?
PTFE and Kevlar Threads High temperature sewing threads are often used to fabricate protective clothing, welding and fire blankets, and removable insulation. Kevlar® thread is a flame retardant, self-extinguishing, and thermally stable sewing thread.
Is Kevlar thread fire retardant?
How long does Nomex last?
five years
Protective apparel made of Nomex® is so durable that industrial launderers estimate that it may last for at least five years and be washed and worn at least 125 times without compromising its protection, shape and professional appearance.
