What is Risperidone Consta used for?
RISPERDAL CONSTA® (risperidone) is indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia [see Clinical Studies (14.1)]. RISPERDAL CONSTA® is indicated as monotherapy or as adjunctive therapy to lithium or valproate for the maintenance treatment of Bipolar I Disorder [see Clinical Studies (14.2, 14.3)].
What are the side effects of RISPERDAL CONSTA?
Drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, constipation, tiredness, drooling, weight gain, or redness/swelling/pain at the injection site may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Dizziness and lightheadedness can increase the risk of falling.
What is the best drug for schizophrenia?
Clozapine is the most effective antipsychotic in terms of managing treatment-resistant schizophrenia. This drug is approximately 30% effective in controlling schizophrenic episodes in treatment-resistant patients, compared with a 4% efficacy rate with the combination of chlorpromazine and benztropine.
How quickly does Risperdal injection work?
It is given as directed by your doctor, usually once every two weeks. To reduce irritation from the injection, your doctor will alternate between the left and right side with each dose. When you first start this medication, it may take at least 3 weeks before this medication starts working.
