Can African swine fever affect humans?
African Swine Fever (ASF) is a highly contagious viral disease of pigs. In its acute form the disease generally results in high mortality. ASF is a different disease to swine flu. The virus does not affect people and there is no impact on human health.

Clinical symptoms may look very much like those of classical swine fever: fever, listless pigs, lack of appetite, red skin, (bloody) diarrhoea, vomiting. Bleeding, cyanosis (blue skin) and necrosis of parts of the skin (blackening) may occur. Sows may abort upon infection.

Also, to monitor the animals daily for any sign of illness, to isolate those found to be sick, and to contact the veterinarian immediately for medical intervention.
How long does ASF last?
ASF virus, in a suitable protein environment, is stable over a wide temperature and pH range. It has been shown to survive in serum at room temperature for 18 months, in refrigerated blood for 6 years, and in blood at 37°C for a month.
Can African swine fever be cured?
There is no treatment or vaccine available for this disease. The only way to stop this disease is to depopulate all affected or exposed swine herds.
What will happen if I eat pork with ASF?
African swine fever has no impact on human health. Humans cannot catch ASF from infected pigs not can they contract the disease by eating meat from a pig infected with ASF.
How do you cure ASF?
There is no treatment. All infected animals must be isolated and culled immediately upon confirmation of presence of the virus.
