Can you have nits without live lice?
It’s not uncommon to find nits in your hair without live lice. If you find only nits, you should still treat your hair as if you have lice. You should also avoid close contact with other people and sharing hats or brushes until you no longer see nits or lice in your hair.
Can you have nits but no bugs?
It is possible to have Nits and no lice in the very early stages of an infestation. It is also possible to have leftover nits from a prior infestation. Those would be old and unviable but with no real way to tell the difference to new lice.
What color are live and dead nits?
When treating head lice, it may be difficult to tell whether the nit is still alive or if it has hatched. The simplest way to tell is by looking at the color — live and dead nits are brown while hatched nits are clear.
Where do lice live without a host?
To survive, head lice need to feed on blood several times a day. Without a host to feed on, head lice will die within 24 to 48 hours. Viable (live) eggs are usually laid within 6mm from the scalp. “Nits” is actually the term for hatched (empty) louse eggs.

How do you know you don’t have lice anymore?
Nits more than 1/4 inch from the scalp: old infestation. You may have treated your lice, and remnants are moving down the scalp. Because lice eggs typically hatch close to the scalp, seeing nits further down your hair can indicate that the infestation is inactive.
Why do I see nits but no lice?
Nits are often confused with other things found in the hair such as dandruff, hair spray droplets, and dirt particles. If no live nymphs or adult lice are seen, and the only nits found are more than ¼-inch from the scalp, the infestation is probably old and no longer active and does not need to be treated.
Will dead nits fall out eventually?
Nits may remain after lice have gone. They are empty eggshells and stick strongly to hair. They will eventually fall out. If you prefer, a fine-toothed ‘nit comb’ can remove them.
