Does spray foam shrink over time?
Spray foam in particular has been sold as a thermal insulator and air barrier in one. But once installed, spray foam, similar to foam boards, will expand and shrink over time. And both open and closed cell spray foam can and do regularly shrink and pull away from other air barrier components.
What causes foam to crack?
The curing process after spray foam is applied inherently entails shrinkage and hardening. Not only can such shrinkage result in pulling back from stud bays and other connections – which often leads to gaps in the insulation layer – it can lead to cracking within the foam structure itself.
How do you get rid of gaps and cracks in foam?
Acetone is a solvent that dissolves uncured polyurethane foam and can be used to clean up foam before it cures. Acetone-based nail polish remover will also work to remove uncured foam. Unfortunately, these products don’t have any effect on cured foam. Once it cures, you’ll have to scrape or sand off unwanted foam.
Does Great Stuff foam shrink?
Great stuff expands as it cures, then shrinks a little. That’s why I wait several days to carve it. It can depend on the humidity as well.
