Are Mercury lower units interchangeable?
Are Mercury and Mariner lower units interchangeable? No. Different type lower. It doesn’t have to be a black max, and it can be a mercury or mariner.
How do you find the lower unit of Mercury?
For Mercury outboard engines 8hp and higher, your engine serial number (ESN) tag can be found halfway down the transom assembly on the right (starboard) side, just below the engine’s powerhead. For engines 6hp and lower, you can find your Mercury outboard serial number on the top of the swivel bracket.
How does a Mercury lower unit work?
The lower unit is also known as the gearcase. It’s the portion of the outboard that receives the rotation and power from the engine’s powerhead to transfer it to the propeller and prop shaft. The propeller rotates, which allows your boat to move either forward or backwards through the water.
What is a Bravo 3 outdrive?
Bravo 3: MerCruiser’s Bravo 3 outdrive feature counter-rotating dual propellers that improve propulsion efficiency, speed, acceleration and handling on a boat. The two props are mounted in front of one another and turn in opposite directions eliminating wasted energy from the propeller wash.
How much does it cost to rebuild lower unit?
A typical set of parts for the gearcase can cost $500-600 and may go higher if the gearcase is severely damaged. If you have your local mechanic repair the lower unit, his labor will run about $300-400 for this type of repair.
Can you run an outboard motor without the lower unit?
No problem. Either use the flush fitting or use a piece of hose connected with a hose clamp to the water tube. As noted, on an HPDI a hose can be attached to the water pump tube in which case the motor can be run.
What year is my old Mercury outboard by serial number?
Answer: Every Mercury outboard has a serial number label located on the transom bracket area of the engine. The latest serial number labels display a 2-digit number in a box at the lower right portion of the label. These digits coincide with the last two digits of the year in which the outboard was manufactured.
