Visitor Information There are nine libraries at Vanderbilt University with holdings to support research in a wide variety of subjects. Visitors are welcome to browse the open book stacks, to use a breadth of electronic journals and books, newspapers and periodicals, and to use government documents.

Can you visit the George Peabody Library?
The George Peabody Library, in keeping with Peabody’s original gift, is free and open to the public. Today the library is part of the Special Collections Department of the Sheridan Libraries of Johns Hopkins University. It is a non-circulating collection, but readers and researchers are welcome to use the collection.

Alice Vanderbilt sold 1 West 57th street—the grand mansion lauded as the largest house in Manhattan—for $6.1M (about $83.2M in today’s dollars) in 1925, citing how expensive the taxes were on the property. Is the Peabody Institute open to the public?
Peabody is open during the summer and visitors can tour our halls, facilities, and 19th century architecture. Many faculty and students are not on campus during the summer, so this would be a nice, quiet time to see a behind-the-scenes tour of our campus.
