The AKM is a gas operated assault rifle using a short stroke gas piston and rotating bolt. The main difference between AK-47 and AKM is the use of stamped sheet metal for the receiver. This makes the AKM both lighter and less costly to produce than the machined receiver of the AK-47.

What is the difference between the AK-74 and the AKM?
The AK-74 was built around the 5.45 round in an attempt to mimic the M-16’s excellent performance with the 5.56 cartridge. Well, AK-47 was the first model (as you can see in the article), no wonder if it has a very bad accuracy. But how ever the worst accuracy of AK family is the AKM. The AK-101 is very good until a lot elite military organization (or what ever is it) adopt it. I’m also still 12 =D.
