Today, MPFL reconstruction is a safe option for children and teenagers. In rare cases, people with patellar instability may be candidates for a surgical repair of their MPFL, rather than a complete MPFL reconstruction, such as when the MPFL has pulled a small piece of bone off the inside part of the kneecap.

You may resume driving a vehicle when you have stopped your narcotic pain medication and you can comfortably bend and straighten your operative knee. This typically occurs approximately 4-6 weeks after surgery.
How long does it take to bend your knee after MPFL surgery?
Patients who undergo a MPFL reconstruction must be in a brace for 6 weeks after surgery to allow the ligament to heal. Knee motion is limited to 90 degrees for the first two weeks after surgery and then full motion is allowed.
When is MPFL surgery necessary?
Most first time MPFL injuries can be treated non-surgically with NSAIDs and immobilization. It’s then followed by physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around the knee. Your physician may recommend surgery if the injury is more severe, or if there are small pieces of detached bone or cartilage in the knee.
How do you sleep after MPFL surgery?
You may sleep on your back or side; however, you must sleep with your knee brace on to prevent unwanted movement at the knee. It may be more comfortable to sleep with a pillow between your knees. You may need help to lift your leg on and off the bed at home.
How long do you have to wear a brace after MPFL reconstruction?
Locking Knee Brace – The brace is to be worn for up to 4-6 weeks fullowing surgery. It will be locked straight until bone healing and good knee strength have been achieved (usually 5-6 weeks after surgery). At that time your doctor will determine if your leg has enough strength to allow your brace to be unlocked.
