What watercolors are opaque?
Watercolour is never truly opaque; we call opaque watercolour ‘gouache’ and it is its own medium with its own techniques. However some pigments are less transparent than others. For many years I used only transparent colours, and there’s a lot of benefit in sticking with a transparent palette.
How do I make watercolor opaque?
Try applying 3-4 coats of white gesso to your next blank canvas and see if that makes any difference in the strength of your colors when you paint. Another technique to make your paint more opaque is to add a small amount of white gesso or white paint.
Is opaque watercolor good?
Opaque watercolors let little light in, and can appear muddy or chalky. When layering watercolors, transparent watercolors allow color to show, mixing well, while opaque lets less color and light through and are less effective when mixing or layering.
Is opaque watercolor the same as gouache?
A primary difference between the two paints is that gouache is more opaque than watercolor. When a layer of watercolor is applied, the white paper and any preliminary drawings underneath will show through, whereas when a layer of gouache is applied, the paper will not show through nearly as much.

egg yolk
Egg tempera is composed of egg yolk, powdered pigment, and distilled water. The egg yolk serves as the binder that holds the pigment together. The addition of water turns the paint into a usable paste-like form.
What is the difference between transparent and opaque watercolors?
Some watercolor paints are transparent meaning they appear to sit on top of the paper and allow a lot of light to pass through them. Opaque watercolors are the exact opposite. They allow little light to pass through and thus are less effective when layering.
What does opaque color look like?
The term opaque originated from the Latin, meaning ‘dark’ meaning ‘not transparent’ and opaque substance does not let any light pass through at all. A paint that is opaque will give a solid colour. Blacks and whites are always opaque and any colour mixed with them will become more opaque.
Why is gouache better than watercolor?
Even when thinned out with water, gouache offers a bold, flat wash of color, while watercolors are more transparent and light. Gouache is a versatile paint, so there’s really no one standard recommendation for when to use it, but in general, it’s ideal for creating large, bold areas of color.
