Where do Sport England get their funding from?
We receive our funding from two different sources: from the government and from the National Lottery. The Annual Funding Agreement sets out the funding that we’ll receive from the Government.

Major sports organisations and charities from across England have joined a nationwide campaign to thank National Lottery players for helping to fund grassroots sport. Since it was launched in 1994, the National Lottery has invested more than £5.7 billion into community sport and helped people live active lives.

The primary role of UK Sport is to strategically invest National Lottery and Exchequer income to maximise the performance of UK athletes in the Olympic and Paralympic Games and other major championship events. We make four year awards, but in the context of a twelve year horizon.
How does lottery funding work for athletes?
This is a direct payment made to the Athlete as a contribution towards their ordinary living and personal sporting costs. The APA is solely funded by National Lottery income. The level of an APA is determined by a number of criteria, with a focus on the athlete’s sporting achievements and potential.

A gold medalist will be paid $744,000 (£535,192), for silver it’s $372,000 (£267,635), and for bronze, it’s $286,000 (£205,762). Australia has the lowest medal bonus in 2021 of $15,100 (£10,863) for gold, $11,400 (£8,200) for silver and $7,600 (£5,467) for bronze.
