In collaboration with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, we have rated 148 bike helmets using the STAR evaluation system. Our impact tests evaluate a helmet’s ability to reduce linear acceleration and rotational velocity of the head resulting from a range of head impacts a cyclist might experience.

The sensors measured acceleration and rotational velocity, which the researchers used to estimate concussion risk. Each helmet was then given a star rating, with 5 stars being the highest and zero stars the lowest, to represent how effectively the model reduces overall injury risk.

A good-fitting helmet should be snug but not annoyingly tight. It should sit level on your head (not tilted back) with the front edge one inch or less above your eyebrows so that your forehead is protected. Push the helmet from side to side and back to front.
