Why does an ionizer smell?

How do you clean an ionizer?
Only use a slightly moist cloth (preferably a microfibre cloth) to simply wipe the appliance, focusing especially on the carbon brush. Wipe it at least once a month. If the brush is hard and sticky on touch, you can use a small amount of mild soap to dissolve the dirt.
