Some things, like replacing a line set, are highly recommended but not always necessary or even possible.
What is line set insulation?
A line set is two semi-flexible copper pipes which connect the outdoor air conditioner or heat pump to the indoor air handler. They are a smaller pipe, the liquid line and a larger pipe, the suction line. Both lines are insulated on mini-split line sets.
How long is HVAC line set?
Maximum equivalent length of line set is: a. 250 feet for single stage units with scroll or reciprocating compressors. b. 150 feet for single stage units with rotary compressors.
Does a line set need to be replaced?
It will ultimately shorten the life span of the compressor. Ideally, the best option is to run a new lineset so there’s no chance of the two different oils mixing. If a new lineset is not an option for whatever reason, a flush can also be done.
Do I need to remove refrigerant if I cut my line set?
The answer is sometimes, yes. You want the right amount of refrigerant. It’s like the Goldilocks rule.
How much does it cost to replace AC line set?
AC line set replacement cost The cost to replace an AC line set is $200 to $650, depending on the length and location. The line set carries refrigerant from the outdoor condenser to the indoor evaporator coil through the wall or foundation. A line set typically requires replacement if a weld doesn’t stop the leak.
How long can a line set be?
If the line set will not be more than 75 feet long, you are using the factory-recommended line size, and it’s not pushing liquid uphill more than 25 feet, very likely no special considerations are necessary. Remember, this is just a rule of thumb.
How short can AC line set be?
The minimum that it can be cut down to is 10′. If cut down it must be re-flared. If you need longer than 25′ you may purchase a run up to 50′ from a HVAC parts house. Refrigerant lines cannot be spliced together it should be one continuous run.

What is an air conditioner line set?
These lines connect the outdoor air conditioner or heat pump to the indoor evaporator coil. The smaller of the two pipes is called the liquid line. The larger pipe is known as the suction line, and includes insulation. The diameter on the liquid line for standard residential systems is 3/8 inches in diameter.
