What is the size of an endoscopy capsule?
The capsule is the size of a large vitamin pill, about an inch (2.5 centimeters) long and less than ½ inch (1.3 centimeters) wide. Each capsule is used only once. The health care provider may ask you to lie down or sit up while swallowing the capsule.
Is it hard to swallow capsule endoscopy?
The capsule is small and very easy to swallow. In very rare cases where the capsule cannot be swallowed, it can be easily introduced directly into the small bowel with an endoscope. Swallowing difficulties do not prevent capsule endoscopy from taking place.
How long does it take for a Pillcam to pass?
Once the procedure is finished, your body might expel the camera capsule within hours or after several days. Each person’s digestive system is different. If you don’t see the capsule in the toilet within two weeks, contact your doctor.
How often does PillCam get stuck?
Are there any risks or side effects? There is a remote chance — less than 1% — the PillCam may get lodged in your digestive tract. The chance rises slightly for patients with known small bowel obstructions or with Crohn’s disease.
How do you know if you passed the PillCam?
Check your bowel movements during this period to see if the capsule has passed prematurely. If you experience nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain, or if the capsule passes within eight hours of swallowing it, you should go immediately back to your doctor.
How do I know when my smart pill is passed?
The SmartPill Capsule is disposable and passes naturally with your bowel movement. You should not feel any pain or discomfort when the capsule passes. If the capsule does not pass in a bowel movement within a few days after the test, please contact our office.
How big is an endoscopy tube?
Standard upper endoscopes have an external diameter in the range of 8.0 to 9.8 mm with a 2.4- to 2.8-mm channel. Therapeutic channel scopes have an outer diameter in the range of 11.3 to 13.2 mm with an instrument channel of 3.2 to 3.7 mm, and in the larger scopes dual channels up to 3.8 mm in diameter.
